Vo Thi Minh Hien of Quang Ngai Province had endured pain from a sciatic nerve for many months but thanks to an acupuncture clinic funded by an overseas Swiss-Vietnamese professor, she is far more comfortable these days.
Tu Kien Le donated 100 million VND (6,000 USD) in 1994 to help poor patients in his home-town in the province, and since that time, has sent 600 USD every month to keep it operating.
The clinic’s manager, Dr Lu Thi Hong Hoa, says patients are offered free treatment and medicine.
The Quang Ngai Red Cross also help manage the clinic, which is located in the organisation’s building. The Red Cross deputy head Huynh Dung says 80 to 90 patients are seen everyday.
Since 1994, more than 224,000 patients have been treated there, most of whom are poor patients in neighbouring provinces, including retired officers.
In recognition of Prof Le’s contribution, the Vietnam Red Cross has honoured him with a humanitarian certificate. Le has received many diplomas of merit from the Quang Ngai People’s Committee and the Vietnam Fatherland Front as well.
