World Bank to fund health project in north (11/07/2008)

The World Bank will fund US$60 million for a project to strengthen district hospitals and improve access to health services in the northern mountainous provinces of Vietnam.

The bank signed an agreement with the State Bank of Vietnam Thursday for the finance from the International Development Association – a World Bank Group’s concessional lending arm for low income countries.

The $66 million Vietnam Northern Upland Health Support Project will be implemented in Bac Kan, Cao Bang, Dien Bien, Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Lao Cai, and Son La provinces.

It will strengthen the health workforce capacity and develop pilot models to increase staff retention; provide basic medical equipment and selective facility repair and refurbishment; and improve hospital management.

The project will give money to support government agencies to improve monitoring, reporting and supervision of the Health Care Fund for the Poor.
