Quang Ngai City - In a bid to effectively deal with the imminent outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD), Department of Physical Examination and Treatment Management (Vietnam Ministry of Health) has yesterday 16 June 2008 conducted a workshop on diagnosis and treatment of the disease in Quang Ngai City, Vietnam.
Doctors and medical staff from different hospitals and health departments across the Central Region and Highlands have attended the workshop.
Reports have been presented in the workshop covering a wide range of issues relating to the disease such as the outbreaks in the world and in Vietnam, diagnosis and treatment methods, lessons learned and experieces in dealing with clinical cases.
Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) is a human syndrome caused by intestinal viruses of the Picornaviridae family. HFMD usually affects infants and children, moderately contagious and is spread through direct contact with the mucus, saliva, or feces of an infected person. It typically occurs in small epidemics in nursery schools or kindergartens, usually during the summer and autumn months with its usual incubation period is 3-7 days.
There has been so far no specific treatment for the disease.
