English no longer ‘monopolises’ online courses (28/05/2008)

Online training websites now offer various courses on public relations, information technology and all subjects for general students, not only English courses.

Vo Van Hau, a student at the HCM City Technological Teacher Training University, said that while searching for data and documents on the Internet, he found many online courses, which helped him save time and money.

“Online studying is very good and convenient for those who don’t have time so it will develop strongly in the near future,” said Pham Hang, Head of the Personnel Department of Huong Giang Travel.

Many websites in Vietnam provide various online training courses, ranging from math, literature, etc. for general students to public relations, management, sales, IT, etc. for those who have jobs.

Online training is developing in Vietnam along with the progress of telecom and IT infrastructure facilities. English training courses are the most attractive to online learners so there are a lot of websites supplying English courses designed for everyone, from basic to advanced levels, from specialised courses to Toefl, Ielts, Toeic, etc. Typical sites are luyenthianhvan.org, khongcogikho.com and hocngoaingu.com.vn.

The need for online courses for general students is also high and to meet this need, lectures for students from the 6th to 12th grades are available on many sites, such as hocmai.vn, truongtructuyen.vn, school.hoahoctro.vn.

Most recently, vietnamlearning.com.vn has offered courses on software design, and computer sciences, web design, network mastering and grant NITT and Element K’s certificates to learners.

Low cost is one of the advantages of online training. Luu Hoang Vu of Hanoi National University said he attended a CCNA course on vietnamlearning.com at VND2.4 million only, less than a half of a normal class.

The fees for subjects for general students is only VND5,000 to VND10,000/lecture and VND15,000 to VND100,000/subject. Online exams are provided free of charge. For online English, a learner has to pay just VND1,000 a day.

Online learning is better than direct learning in some aspects since it is supported by modern technology. Multimedia functions allow learners to have easy exchanges with their teachers, to choose teachers, choose lessons, send questions to teachers, etc.

Some universities in Vietnam like the HCM City University for Natural Sciences, Tra Vinh University and Hanoi Teacher Training University are building their own online training systems.

Besides fee-collecting e-learning websites, many sites offer free courses, for example a management course on fbaclub.com, English course on luyenthianhvan.org, tt

vnol, free-english.com, French course on france-pub.com and Internet course on quantrimang.com. However, as free courses, the interaction on these websites is poor and they lack quality testing.
