Tra Khuc Weir Project, an overflow-type dam to be built across Tra Khuc River of Quang Ngai Province, shall be opened for bidding soon, a source from Quang Ngai Government said.
The project, approved in principle by the provincial government in 2004, is aiming at raising the level of the river, creating a constant appropriate level, especially in dry season. Besides, the proposed weir shall also render the river navigable, deter salinity intrusion, limit underground water contamination, and most noteworthy develop good river ecosystems.
As priliminarily designed, a 1.2 km long dam shall be constructed about 1.1 km downstream the existing Tra Khuc Bridge I with the crest of the overflow spillway of 4.2 m, either with rubber or sluice gates. With this proposed spillway available, the level of the section running through the city can constantly range from 1 to 2 metre in dry season.
Quang Ngai Provincial Government has urged the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to finalize the weir design by this July, paving way for calling investment and bidding.
It is roughly estimated by the consultant the weir would cost some VND 170 billion.
