Viettel and VNPT will join forces on a project to build a new sea cable. Apart from Viettel and VNPT, the project will also involve six international telecommunications service suppliers: Aiti and AT&T (the US), PLPT (the Philippines), Reach (Hong Kong)), StarHub (Singapore) and Malaysia Telecom (Malaysia).
The cable will offer the accession rate of 1.92 Tbit/s and be directly connected to North America. The total investment pumped into the project is expected to reach 780mil USD. The members are now discussing their respective capital contributions.
The project was initiated by Malaysia Telecom in February 2006 and is scheduled to be completed in March 2008.
Many experts in the field of information technology and telecommunications have expressed their belief in the project’s importance, saying that the new sea cable would minimise the risk of disconnection due to natural disasters.
Damage to the Hong Kong – China – Taiwan sea cable last month during an earthquake led to the disruption of Internet services in Vietnam.
