Viet Nam look to export 5 million tonnes of rice this year (22/09/2006)

“Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has instructed Vietnamese exporters to adhere to the initially planned export volume of 5 mil tonnes of rice, which can bring in $1.4bil in turnover,” said Viet Nam Bridge.

At a recent meeting with the Vietnam Food Association, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phan The Rue said the target of exporting 5 million tonnes of rice could be achieved without affecting national food security. There are two good reasons. First, a large quantity of rice has been bought from Cambodia. Second, under a recently signed deal between Vietnam and Cambodia, the latter can export 100,000 tonnes of rice to Vietnam without import tax, a source from VOV said.

According to the Vietnam Food Association, Vietnamese enterprises have so far signed contracts with foreign partners to export 4.5 million tonnes of rice, in which 3.5 million tonnes have been exported, fetching US$1 billion in export turnover and fulfilling 75 percent of the set target. The remaining volume of 700,000 tonnes of rice will be delivered from September till the end of the year.

By the end of August, Vietnamese firms had signed contracts to export around 4.5 million tonnes of rice. Of the volume, 3.5 million tonnes had been shipped abroad, equivalent to 75% of the yearly plan, bringing about $1 billion. The remaining volume will be delivered between now and year’s end, the target of exporting 5 million tonnes of rice could be achieved.
