Ly Son island, formerly named Cu Lao Re, consists of many small and large islands and Mu Cu island, 18 nautical miles, approximately 22,336km in the northeast of Quang Ngai. It takes 90 – 120 minutes for the ships to take passengers from Sa Ky seaport. Moreover, tourists can visit this island by air and ship from other seaports.
The total land area is 11 square km with 20,000 citizens, living at Ly Hai and Ly Vinh communes. Since its establishment in 01 January 1993, the systems of roads, schools, hospitals, electricity and wharves have been constructed at Mu Cu puddle and the airport has been upgraded.
Ly Son island has abundant natural resources with many kinds of seafood, agricultural products and strong points in tourism, commerce and services. This island also possesses the geographical strength with the infrastructure system for developing its economy such as Dung Quat – Chu Lai – Van Tuong and Ly Son – Sa Ky – Co Luy – Quang Ngai town. Ly Son island is also situated in the middle of Mong Cai and Ca Mau coasts; it is convenient to approach Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes and the international sea route or the trans Asia route from Ly Son island and vice versa.
Visiting this island, the tourists can climb the mountains, go swimming, go fishing, go rowing or surfing around the large islands and from the large ones to the small ones. They can also enjoy the wonderful ecological environment. They can also see and discover the formation of beautiful sites such as Hang Pagoda, Duc Pagoda, Chinh spring, Mu Cu, Cau cave, To Vo cave, Tien well, Xo La well, the place where Vietnamese revolutionary soldiers were kept in wars, Nam Hai tomb, An Long communal house, Am Linh Pagoda, the martyrs' cemetery, Tam Hoa palace, Chua Troi palace, Loi temple, Ox temple, Ba Diet Pagoda, Tien Hien church and many solemn family temples, particularly Hang Pagoda and Ly Hai the two beautiful sited ranked by the government.
