Quangngai agriculture has stably and firmly developped, assuring sufficient food for local consumption and supplying material for food processing. The total agricultural production value has rocketed from 341.3 billion VND in 1990 to 1,557.5 billion VND in 2000. In addition to the main food crop of rice, other subsidiary crops such as manioc, maize, sweet potato, bean of various kinds, etc have also enjoyed great growth. Besides, Quangngai is also an area of vegetable cultivation, allowing the supplies of green and clean vegetables not only for local consumption but also for that of neighbouring provinces, including the Central Highland.
As a place of sugar making tradition, Quangngai , nowadays, has about 10,000 ha of sugarcane growing land which sufficiently supplies material for the two provincial sugar factories and contributes to create stable jobs for thousands of people.
Accounting for 23% of the total agricultural production value, animal husbandary has also made good progresses in a tendency to improving and diversifying cattle and other livestock.
Forest in Quangngai holds several kinds of precious trees and rare animals. Annually, the provincial government pays much attention to afforestation. Today, the wooded land in the province is of about 363,000 ha, accounting for 65.6% of the total natural area.
Quangngai is also famous for cinnamon and cinnamon growing practice, especially in the moutainous district of Trabong. Trabong cinnamon and cinnamon products have appeared on the market, domestic and abroad.
In the past there used to be hundreds of water wheels placed along the banks of the 4 main rivers of the province, lifting water for the sake of agricultural production. These water wheels once were the pride of Quangngai people in their experiences of labouring. Nowadays, the local government has constantly been concerned about the improvement of irrigation network. There have been 120 irrigation works built somewhere throughout the province out of which Thachnham is counted for the greatest and the most important. This work consists of 1,200 Km of canals(accounting for 75% of the total length of canals in the province) capable of covering the irrigating for 50,000 ha of cultivated land.
With a coastline 130 km long and 5 estuaries of Sacan, Saky, Coluy, Mya and Sahuynh, Quangngai enjoys much advantages for the development of fishery: exploitation and aquaculture. The annual catch increases from 18.621 tons in 1990 to 65.010 tons in 2000. Aquaculture, especially shrimp raising, is booming in almost all coastal communes, and has become the spearhead of the provincial economy. The annual shrimp raising yield is of 1000 tons. Such advantages mentioned above have paid the way for seafood processing industry to flourish in the province.
